CASA NEPALESA

Founded in 2010 and led by Chef Tanka Sapkota, the Casa Nepalesa restaurant in Lisbon offers an authentic culinary experience of Nepal, combining products from the Himalayas with Portuguese ingredients and spices ground on-site to reflect the chef’s heritage and culinary traditions. In a tranquil and immersive atmosphere, customers explore unique flavors and aromas, celebrating Nepalese culture through every dish served.

Few know what Yarsagumba is, the most expensive fungus in the world, the improbable combination of caterpillar and fungus found only in the Himalayas above 4000m with prices per kilo close to that of gold. Tanka Sapkota brought it from his country to Casa Nepalesa, where he includes it grated in a goat soup slow-cooked for several hours that evokes childhood memories.

At Casa Nepalesa near the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, the chef wants to promote his country’s culture and democratize hard-to-access ingredients. He was the “architect and decorator” of a space that proposes a journey deep into Nepal, where in each dish – some with secret recipes from the chef’s mother and grandmother – you experience a place at the table of a traditional family home.

The products that cross the steppes of the Himalayas with Portuguese territories range from certified Transmontano goat to wild boar from Évora, passing through wild asparagus, boletus, and chestnuts, cooked with meticulous techniques and rich in flavor and texture.

Each dish has its own story. The steamed wheat pastry, goat offal, fermented leafy green vegetables, freshly ground spices, and handmade samosas and momos. These are some of the inspirations in a house where products occupy the central place. A selection of teas comes from the Ilam region, rice bathed by mountain waters, while the cheese served in the restaurant is done so respecting tradition.

Casa Nepalesa creates an impression of a more tranquil world where, at the foot of the mountains, Hindu gods coexist with Prince Buddha Siddhartha. A land of wonders transported to the table among vapors and smoke that envelop the dishes, where some may perceive the presence of the chef’s mother and father, Kalawati and Jaguputi, attentive to the tradition and soul that Tanka does not let fade.
