IL MERCATO

Inaugurated in 2016 by Chef Tanka Sapkota, Il Mercato in Lisbon is an innovative restaurant with an internal market offering a diverse selection of high-quality Italian products such as homemade organic, fresh pasta made with organic eggs and a wine cellar with affordable prices to take home. Located in the tranquil Pateo Bagatela, this space also functions as a grocery store, providing a sophisticated retreat from the hustle and bustle of the capital.

When Tanka Sapkota opened Il Mercato in 2016, no one talked about restaurants with an internal market, but the concept would be replicated. As if it were a gastronomic grocery store where you can eat, the idea was to bring together high-quality products and celebrate Italian diversity. From the outset, it offered homemade organic fresh pasta that, like other products, can also be taken home, but also flours, oils, sauces, cheeses, and sausages. All under one roof, or as the chef emphasizes, “as if you were in Italy.”

At the restaurant/market, craftsmanship, origins, and the time to cultivate, produce, and prepare food are valued. The menu and grocery store are a journey into the universe of products with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). Among the cheeses, you can find Parmigiano Reggiano Vacche Rosse, organically-produced handmade buffalo mozzarella, Gorgonzola Bolo Nero, and Pecorino Tartufo Sardo, Romano, and Toscano. The world of Il Mercato includes suggestions of Culatello di Zibello PDO – a ham produced in the city of Zibello considered the best in Italy – or the typical salamis of Abruzzo, Tuscany, Veneto, and Emilia Romagna.

The wines Tormaresca, Albino Armani, Pio Cesare, or Villa Antinori are just some references in a broad range that also includes Portuguese regions. Guanciale DOP (cured pork cheek) or Parma cured meat along with fresh mushrooms are inspirations that take customers to different regions of Leonardo Da Vinci’s land.

Located in the center of Lisbon, in the sophistication of the renovated Pateo Bagatela distinguished with architectural awards, Il Mercato’s terrace blends with the quiet pedestrian zone that serves as a refuge, minutes from the capital’s hustle.
